WISH Media Project : Tackling Homelessness in Tameside

Young people with personal experience of homelessness issues have helped the council and its partners produce a new film to capture the good work that has taken place in Tameside.

WISH is a local supported housing project based in Hyde that initiated the project by making a successful application to Tameside Council for Working Neighbourhood Funding to develop a media project.

WISH employed professionals from JMG Media to provide training in film making techniques to young people with a view to improving their confidence and job skills. Along with tenants from WISH, young people from Hurst Young People’s Project and St Peter’s Youth were also involved in all aspects of the film production.

The film focussed on a wide range of good practice initiatives used in Tameside to promote homelessness prevention. These included the peer education project, service user groups and the role of the Housing Advice Centre’s prevention team in helping people avoid having to resort to becoming homeless in the first place.

The film was launched at Stalybridge Hall in November and received very positive feedback. The audience particularly liked some of the drama role-plays produced by young people. There are plans to broadcast the film in the council’s reception areas as well as outside agencies like Connexions and health service buildings.
