Tameside Strategic Partnership Many Partners, One Direction

It’s 10:10 for Tameside

We know that protecting our environment is important and Partner organisations across the TSP have signed up to reducing carbon emissions by 10% during 2010. So far 50,000 people, 2000 businesses, 1000 schools and colleges and 1500 other organisations have signed up to 10:10….when are you signing up?

In the recent State of the Area Address Cllr Roy Oldham Chair of the TSP and Leader of the Council announced that Tameside MBC is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 10% during 2010 as part of the national 10:10 campaign. Following on from this declaration a request was made to TSP Board for all partner organisations to join the campaign. So far, a number of TSP members such as Tameside College, T3SC and Tameside and Glossop Primary Care Trust have announced that they are signing up and are showing their commitment to the initiative.

What is 10:10 about?

We have had successes in reducing the CO2 in the borough but we know there is more to be done. In 2007 Tameside’s carbon footprint per capita population was 5.5 t CO2. We have the second-lowest emissions across Greater Manchester and were the third-fastest improver over the previous 12 months but as the graph below shows, comparing emissions between 2005 and 2007, there is much more to do. Our emissions from transport are going the wrong way. 10:10 also helps Tameside people and companies to support the local economy. If we source goods and services from the companies on the Tameside Works First list, we’re also cutting down on emissions.

What will it mean we have to do?

For 10:10 organisations need to record emissions from:
- Electricity
- Oil and gas for heating
- Petrol and diesel for fleet vehicles
- Air travel

A reporting tool will be available online at http://www.1010uk.org for organisations to record their progress. Organisations are asked to record their data via the tool before making any public claims about reductions achieved as part of 10:10. The key to success at 10:10 is getting people to change their behaviour. The ten pledges behind 10:10 are listed below. We’re incorporating them into an Energy Charter, which we’re asking our key partners to sign.

Where do I get involved or find out more information?

10:10 is being progressed in the TSP by the multi agency Sustainable Use of Resources Group (SUORG). If you would like more information on 10:10 or want to get involved with the work of the SUORG contact Christina Morton on 342 3550.
