The Council’s Debt Advice Service is always available to assist people who are struggling to make mortgage payments.
- The standard debt advice process commences with income maximisation through tax credits and the benefits system where appropriate.
- Work is then carried out with the homeowner to prepare a financial statement, distinguishing between priority and non-priority debts.
- The debt advisers are in regular contact with the majority of lenders and use their knowledge and negotiation skills to set up affordable repayments and thus prevent repossession.
- Representation at County Court is provided by the debt adviser or through the duty advice scheme
The services have joined forces to improve access to information and advice so that concerned residents can contact the support available via a freephone number or a text back facility or on line.
