Tameside Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership
What is the purpose and what are the goals of the Partnership?
The aim of the Tameside Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership is to improve the quality of life for the people of Tameside, particularly those in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods, and thereby supporting and sustaining a cleaner, safer and greener Borough.
The Partnership is committed to reducing crime, reassuring the public by reducing the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour and to reduce the harm caused by illegal drugs.
We are also dedicated to increasing the capacity of local communities so that people are empowered to participate in local decision-making and are able to influence service delivery.
What is the national context?
The Crime and Disorder Act (1998) introduced for the first time the practice of partnership working to reduce crime and disorder.
It placed a statutory duty on 'Responsible Authorities' (such as the Police, Local Authorities, Primary Care Trust, Fire Service, Probation Service, etc) to work in partnership with a range of other local public, private, community and voluntary groups and with the community itself.
This approach recognises that crime reduction is not solely the responsibility of the Police. Local organisations should work together to collectively provide interventions and responses to tackle problems and provide earlier, more effective solutions.
What are the Partnership's Priorities in Tameside?
Based on what we’re told by Tameside residents, local crime data and national concerns, we’ve come up with a new set of priorities for the next three years.
Priority One: Reduce Acquisitive Crime
We aim to reduce acquisitive crime. These crimes are committed to steal property and are often the motivation for funding substance misuse and include burglary, vehicle crime and robbery.
Priority Two: Improve Quality of Life and Confidence
We aim to improve perceptions of crime and how confident people are in local agencies tackling crime and anti-social behaviour. This will involve tackling crimes that are most visible in our communities and have the most affect on how we feel.
Priority Three: Reduce Re-offending
We work with offenders to prevent them from offending in the future. A very small minority of offenders commit a disproportionate amount of crime. We identify and work with these people to divert them away from crime.
Priority Four: Reduce Violent Crime & Sexual Offences
We aim to further reduce violent crime and sexual offences. Violent crime is low in Tameside but these offences often have long lasting effects on victims and fear of violence can affect how we about where we live and work.
Priority Five: Reduce Drugs & Alcohol Misuse
We aim to reduce substance misuse – both drug and alcohol. We work with partners to reduce the supply of illegal drugs, promote sensible drinking messages and work with drug using offenders to get them into treatment and divert them from crime.
